Chapter Ten

“Let’s call it a night, and head back to the room,” Rafe whispered to Violet. He knew if anyone over heard him they would simply think a new husband was asking his wife for a romantic interlude. His true motivation was to get Violet alone and find out what had upset her at dinner.

“Rafe, we can’t leave in the middle of dinner,” she said, but he saw in her eyes that leaving was exactly what she wanted to do.

“The hell we can’t,” he said. “Let’s go.” He grabbed her hand and took her from the dance floor. As they passed Skylar dancing with his wife, Rafe gave him a nod. “We are gonna call it a night. It’s been a long day,” he said. “Thank you for the hospitality.”

“Of course my boy, and tomorrow if everything goes well, we’ll take a look at that paper work,” Skylar replied giving Rafe a wink that made his skin crawl. Skylar Dennis may seem like an ultra-conservative family man, but if Rafe had to guess he was sure he would find that there was a wolf, lurking under that sheep’s clothing.

He didn’t like the way Skylar ogled Violet repeatedly during the meal. He didn’t think she had noticed, but her abrupt attempt to leave the meal, and her nervous demeanor told him he was probably wrong about that and it bothered him. Not only did the CEO not know his marriage was a fake, but his own wife had been at the table beside him as he seemed to openly covet Violet.

When he insisted she start the dancing, it had been anything but innocent. And Rafe didn’t like it. Not one bit. He had spent so much time worrying about if he was the right man to sell to Skylar Dennis he hadn’t stopped to think if Skylar was the type of man he wanted to allow to buy his company.

And if the old man thought for one minute Rafe was about to let him anywhere near Violet, well he had another thing coming. Rafe knew he had no right to be territorial when it came to Violet, but he couldn’t help how he felt, and there was no way he was going to allow Skylar Dennis to make her feel uncomfortable.

As they entered the bedroom, Violet let out a visible sigh of relief.

“Hey,” Rafe said. “I don’t think I said thank you.”

“For what?”

“For you agreeing to this crazy scheme, coming here with me. Or for how great you’ve been with my son.”

“Travis is a great kid, and even though I haven’t known you long, I think you are a great dad. Plus you are paying me to be here.” She smiled, and Rafe’s heart melted a touch. She really was stunning, sweet and funny. David hiring her to do work on his fence, was probably the smartest thing that no good assistant did.

“Do you want to tell me what happened at dinner?” He sat down on the bed, and patted the mattress next to him.
